LAUSANNE, September 23, 2022 – As the AIPS Sport Media Awards, the highest international prize in sports journalism, approach the final deadline for submissions, here is a reminder of the importance of participating, and some of the things that we’ve accomplished in these first four years together following the road of #SportMediaExcellence.
Organised by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), the AIPS Sport Media Awards accept journalistic pieces in different formats, published or broadcast in traditional sports media and in new digital channels. In the 2021 edition, there were 133 nationalities and 35 languages represented across the eight main categories.
The categories are:
1) Photography – Sports Action;
2) Photography – Portfolio;
3) Written Press – Best Colour Piece;
4) Written Press, Best Column. 5) Audio.
6) Video – Documentary longer than 10 minutes;
7) Video – Athlete Profile longer than 10 minutes;
8) Short Video shorter than 10 minutes.
Three optional Young Reporters Under 30 categories, for those born after 1993, offer recognition and opportunities, including a trip to the ceremony and an AIPS scholarship at a top international event.
IMPORTANT DATES Journalists can participate directly with their work in any language, for free. Editors can also make third-party applications if they represent the same media outlet, and the authors are duly informed. For this fifth edition, the AIPS Sport Media Awards will consider works that have been broadcast or published for the first time between November 5, 2021, and October 14, 2022.
PRIZES Each participant receives a certificate of participation, and those who qualify for each round receives a second certificate depending on its final position (longlist, shortlist, Top 10, Top 3). Podium nominees receive an invitation to travel to the final ceremony, set for April 2023 in Europe, and a prize ranging between $ 2,000 (third place), $ 3,000 (second place) and $ 8,000 (first place) in each of the eight main categories. Continental rankings are also released shortly after the ceremony, in order to celebrate the importance of the highest rated works on a regional level.
MULTICULTURAL The AIPS Sport Media Awards have managed to attract the attention of more than 3,500 journalists from 157 countries throughout the first four editions and have featured winning works from the five continents. The selection process involves professionals from 36 countries. The works go through five stages in order to reach the final podium.

The AIPS Sport Media Awards are our way of recognizing those journalists that are showing the importance of building bridges between generations, the importance of having a clean sport, defending the Human Rights, seeking for the truth and fighting against corruption. It is a celebration of our profession and our values,” says AIPS president Gianni Merlo.
In the last edition, special commendations and certificates of merit were introduced to highlight works whose values were aligned to the cornerstone values of AIPS, including fighting against racism and all forms of discrimination; defending Human Rights and gender equality, safeguarding a clean world of sports, showcasing sport as a tool for hope, underlining the social and cultural role of sports, defending the importance of access to sources and presenting innovative ways of sports reporting, among others.
